In March 2020, the world went into lockdown. Like so many other people, I had to start working from home full-time. This meant a massive change in my routine and ability to escape technology overload.
Getting frustrated and fed up of looking at a different variety of screens all day, I decided to take up a hobby that would feed my creative mindset and allow me to escape doom-scrolling various social media apps all day.
Having not painted anything since I was a 17 year old in art class, I had no idea if my paintings would turn out as childish doodles or acceptable paintings? But there was only one way to find out.
Over the next 2 years, I experimented with various paints, styles and media. I found oils too tricky to work with and struggled to stop the paintings from being ruined due to their incredibly long drying time. However; with acrylic on canvas, I found a method of painting that gave me the detail I wanted, but also proved much easier to master.
I have painted several pieces featuring my favourite town of New Quay in West Wales. I have found the ocean, harbour town, beach and sky provide an amazing amount of inspiration.
I have also started to branch out from landscapes and have started painting more traditional still life, featuring flowers and animals. The “No Kitty” painting garnered thousands of likes and comments on Reddit and made the front page.
